What Does Sustainability Actually Mean?
Breaking Down Sustainability
Sustainability isn't just a buzzword. It’s about living in a way that doesn't deplete or negatively impact our natural resources. Think of it as a lifestyle that supports the planet rather than harms it. Sounds pretty great, right?
Why It Matters
Ever wonder why everyone is talking about sustainability? It’s because our daily choices impact the environment and the future environment we and our future families plant to live in. By being mindful, we can help reduce pollution, conserve resources, and support a healthier planet.
So How Do I Start?
Small Steps, Big Impact
Starting small is key. You don’t have to overhaul your entire life overnight. Let’s look at some simple changes you can make right now.
Get Educated On Plastic
Plastic is everywhere, it’s not really our friend. Swap out plastic bags for reusable ones. Use glass jars and containers instead of plastic containers where you can and also learn the recyclable codes for plastics as not all plastics are the same so unfortunately not all plastics can be recyclable. Some plastics can be recycled without dispersing harmful toxins into the atmosphere or using huge amounts of resources to process. So learning the difference, makes the difference.
Invest in Reusables
Reusable water bottles, coffee cups, shopping bags & high use replacements i.e.; face pads, cleaning cloths and menstrual cups these not only save you money but are a great start to becoming a more sustainable household.
Sustainable Essentials
Green Your Cleaning Routine
There are more and more sustainable options when it comes to household cleaning products. Make sure to always read the back of the product, honing in on the ingredients of the product taking the time to search and understand each and every ingredient and its use. There is too much greenwashing in products these days so the extra 5 mins it takes to understand your products can help you save money and save unwanted chemicals finding their way into your house.
(Basic household cleaning products do not need heavy duty chemicals to clean and disinfect a surface, let me repeat, this is applied for BASIC HOME CLEANING PRODUCTS ONLY)
Bulk is Always Better
If you don’t have time or ingredients to make your own cleaning products it is always best to buy in bulk from reputable sources to keep prices low. This can apply to Dishwashing, Laundry, Garbage and Toilet materials.
Composting, Recycling & Trash Management
In Australia we are always looking for ways to compost, recycle and reduce waste! Pick up a basic kitchen compost bin and start adding your food scraps to this bin. If you have the space for an outdoor composter these are a major boost for your garden and depending on your council you can also get a rebate for the cost of your composter at the time of purchase! It’s not only crucial to recycle if you want to be more sustainable but also learning how to properly recycle and where i.e.; bottle drops, battery drops and soft plastic drops.
Keeping an eye on waste can help by ditching plastic wrap and using beeswax wraps. Taking your own containers and fillable bags to use instead of plastic produce bags. Using reusable baking sheet mats instead of baking paper and investing in a green waste bin for people who live with lots of greenery on their property.
There’s so much more you can do in this area but these are a few great starting points!

Sustainable Lifestyle Choices
Sustainable Fashion
Fast fashion is an issue, a big moral, ethical and artistic, financial and obviously a huge sustainable issue. There are landfills of clothing bigger than countries in the world with no solutions of processes that cause major health and environmental issues to its surrounding population.
Source decent clothing from your local Op Shop/ Thrift Store, attend local clothing rummage/ clothing swap markets.
Do research on your local designers, not runway but local clothing companies creating clothes for the everyday person that are made ethically and locally. If money is an issue, look at your current wardrobe and be honest with yourself.
“Do I really need more clothes?” I can bet you any money, the answer is going to be no. Wear the clothes that fit and donate the ones that don't! When you feel you need to purchase clothing again, be mindful. Ask yourself; “Do I need this? Will I wear this more than once? Can I wear this in multiple outfits? Does the cost match the quality?”
I personally purchase clothing maybe once a year and I am still doing a yearly cull of clothing I rarely or haven't worn in that past year and I can also safely and easily state I wear 90% of all the clothing I own.
Conscious Eating
Eating less meat and more plants is great for the planet. Try incorporating meatless Mondays or shop at your local farmers' market.
The biggest move you can also make in this area is to only get takeaway once a week. It can be hard if you work a role which is super demanding or has you working irregular hours but inserting this option for just one day a week can kick start a new helpful habit.
For those who are more cooking savvy, cook your own version of a meal or meals you enjoy at restaurants or take away joints i.e.; make your own fish and chips, make your own pizza, make your own Indian curry.
In this you are purchasing produce or ingredients you may not have before and you are actively participating in all areas of the production of this meal, instead of sitting on a couch calling or ordering a meal online waiting for it to arrive.
From environmentally friendly products to engaging classes, we're here to support your journey towards a greener future. Ready to make a change? Let’s do this together!
